Our dentist, Dr. Kenneth Pollary will extract a tooth as a last resort. Normally, it is best to keep all of your natural teeth when possible. However, if a tooth is severely damaged or infected, it may create a hazard for your other teeth or the soft tissue in your mouth. At that point, the dentist may decide to remove it and discuss restoration options with you during a later appointment.
In most cases, people have no problems after an extraction. However, to make certain that your recovery goes smoothly, there are some things you can do.
You should avoid smoking or tobacco use after an extraction. Tobacco will keep the socket from healing quickly, and smoking can introduce bacteria into your mouth. Additionally, the act of smoking or spitting can dislodge or damage the protective blood clot that forms in the socket. That clot can also be damaged by using a straw to drink. During the first 24 hours after your treatment, you should stick to cool and soft foods if you get hungry. You can brush your other teeth, but you should gently rinse the extraction site with a salt and water mixture. Get plenty of rest. If you experience pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, or apply an ice pack for 20 minutes at a time.
